Die Nadeln besitzen im unteren Bereich Widerhaken, die beim Einstechen die Wollfasern greifen und miteinander verbinden. Durch das wiederholte Einstechen verhaken sich die Fasern dauerhaft, sodass stabile Filzformen entstehen.
Die Filznadeln können einzeln verwendet oder in einen Filznadelhalter eingesetzt werden. Für optimale Ergebnisse empfiehlt sich eine Filzunterlage wie Bürstenmatte oder Schaumstoff, um Nadeln und Arbeitsfläche zu schonen.
